Using Technology to Reach and Retain Students--Early--In an Online Class

How can we encourage students to actively engage in an online course in the absence of the face-to-face interaction with peers and the instructor? It can be difficult to encourage learners to connect with the course when the course is online. That is more difficult when one considers that there are not the same “Wow” factors in instructional technology-- instructional technology cannot directly compete with video games, social media, or television. However, there are techniques instructors can use to demonstrate presence, humanize online courses and encourage students’ participation. In this session, the presenter will discuss strategies to improve teacher presence and engage students at the beginning of the online course.
